A Just Now: Equity and transport in a changing climate

Climate concerns have rapidly become more prominent in transport policy and planning. As we work to promote sustainable transport, it is also important to consider the needs of people left behind by historic policy and investment decisions.
Building on MRCagney's work on equity, inclusion, and sustainable transport, this paper summarises why equity is important in transport, and what we can do about it as a transport sector.
The paper title is 'A Just Now' to emphasise the urgency of focusing on people who are not accessing what they need, right now. By asking different questions and thinking about our roles in different ways, we can all contribute to a transport sector that demonstrates inclusion.
Of course, equitable and sustainable society depends on people outside of the transport sector too. The paper challenges us all to think about who else we can work with to get to the heart of what matters to people in the communities we work for.
We live in rapidly changing financial and political contexts. Promoting the needs of people with most to gain from investment, while working to promote low-carbon means of access, will result in the most tangible change.
A Just Now is within our reach, if we challenge ourselves to want it.
