As part of the Street Design Guide suite, MRCagney developed Auckland Transport’s Cycleway Quality of Service Tool. The tool is designed for practitioners to evaluate proposed and existing cycleways for the quality of the cycling facility. The tool focuses on the key considerations of cycleway design - from conditions of the street and choice of cycleway facility to intersection treatment.
The tool rates cycleway facilities by mid-block and intersection. Each segment (mid-block or intersection) is scored from 1-4. Poor scores reveal where the designs could be improved.
The tool can be used during several stages of the design process. As the tool becomes more widely used, designing high quality cycleways will become much easier at the onset of the project.
